The ikaite tufa columns of the Ikka Fjord in Southwest Greenland constitute a rare en- vironment of low temperature and high pH. The newly sequenced genome of Rhodonel- lum psychrophilum, a bacterium of the ikaite columns, was through comparative genomics 
shown to have both psychrophilic and al- kaliphilic adaptations. Rhodonellum psychrophi- lum is unique in its phenotype and relevant in regard to further understanding of psychrophily and alkaliphily and also for bioprospecting into several kinds of applied biomolecules.
