Bioprocessing of sustainable marine resources for the production of high-value chemicals

Kjartan Sandnes, Marine BioProducts (Norway)
Marine Bioproducts AS (MB) is a biotech com- pany which is developing proprietary enzyme based technologies and manufacturing ingre- dients of all-marine origin. The basic principle comprises that water and enzymes are add- ed to fish raw material to solubilise proteins, release the oil and allow removal of the bones. MB produces and market products (such as peptides, oils and insoluble protein products (meals) with huge global potential, spread over
a variety of applications. The enzymatic pro- cesses help generating novel and innovative products for markets with a growing awareness for the value of fish-based products. The raw material basis at present is fresh co-products from the salmon industry, and at present MB processes 30,000 MT annually. A new factory with a capacity of processing 60.000 tons of raw materials was opened March 2012.
