Development of new bioindustry based on Calanus finmarchicus - Possibilities and Challenges

Kurt Tande, Co-Founder/CTO
Calanus, Norway

Calanus AS is spearheading a new industrial value chain based on the marine copepod Calanus finmarchicus – the most numerous animal species on the planet and the largest renewable resource in the Norwegian Sea. We use sustainable methods to harvest Calanus finmarchicus, and have developed gentle and environmentally friendly biorefinery processes to manufacture its novel products, including our “third generation omega-3” Calanus® Oil and the hydrolysed protein Calanus® Hydrolysate.

Calanus AS invests considerable resources to develop the entire value chain from harvesting, processing, product documentation, regulatory approval and product sales. We encourage and sponsor several research groups in the university sector to use our products in preclinical and clinical studies. Other studies are underway in cooperation with national and international partners and customers.

Kurt will share some of his experiences from developing the novel value chain, provide insight on where Calanus is today and elaborate on the future perspectives based on this attractive resource.
