Session 1: Evolving regulatory aspects of marine biodiversity

Chair: Kjersti Lie Gabrielsen, MarBank, IMR

Marine bioprospecting depends upon access to marine biodiversity, the marine genetic resources. International legal instruments contribute to the regulatory aspects applicable to bioprospecting/biotechnologies. Conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity as well as predictable conditions for access to and fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from research and innovation are important for both providers and users of  genetic resources. The session will focus on general aspects of access and benefit sharing and ex situ access to genetic resources through collections. The session will also give insights to the future direction of European marine biotechnology.
